What’s the difference between the TLX and the TLX Type S? If you’re familiar with the Type S nameplate, you may already have a sense of what to expect: the 2021 Acura TLX Type S is essentially a tuned-up, high-powered variant of the standard 2021 TLX.  Our TLX vs. TLX Type S comparison gets into all the details, but here’s what you should know right off the bat:

  • The Type S model is positioned at the top of the 2021 TLX lineup, and it builds upon the popular A-Spec® configuration, backing up the latter’s style with even more substance.
  • The Acura TLX Type S features a V6 engine that isn’t available on any other trim. It offers much more horsepower and torque than the standard inline-4.
  • The Acura TLX Type S offers more driving modes, as well as larger Brembo® brakes, larger 20-inch wheels, and a number of important visual updates.

This covers the basics! Now it’s time to dig a little deeper.

TLX vs. TLX Type S: Performance

The TLX is a great performer. The Acura TLX Type S takes things up several notches, delivering a genuinely unforgettable ride:

TLX vs. TLX Type S: Engine

  • Acura TLX: 2.0L Turbocharged i4 with 272 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque
  • Acura TLX Type S: 3.0L Turbocharged V6 with 355 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque

TLX vs. TLX Type S: Transmission & Drivetrain

  • Acura TLX: All models feature a 10-Speed Automatic Transmission with Sequential SportShift Paddle Shifters. You can choose between front-wheel drive and Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive™.
  • Acura TLX Type S: Although it features the same transmission, the Type S gains Rev Matching downshifts for even smoother power delivery. SH-AWD® is standard on every TLX Type S.

TLX vs. TLX Type S: Braking & Handling

  • Acura TLX: The TLX receives two-piston calipers that have no trouble stopping the vehicle, but they’re nothing special. The Integrated Dynamics System® offers four driving modes, including an Individual setting.
  • Acura TLX Type S: 14.3-inch Brembo front brake calipers and 13.0-inch rear brake calipers give the TLX Type S a serious improvement in stopping power. The IDS® also lets you take full control with a new and improved Sport+ driving mode.

The Acura TLX Type S also receives a new A-brace, firmer stabilizer bars for both axles, and more supportive dampers. These changes to the chassis allow the TLX Type S to respond more effectively and deliver a new and improved touring experience for San Diego and National City drivers.

TLX vs. TLX Type S: Style & Design

The 2021 Acura TLX has been redesigned: the wheelbase has been expanded by 3.7 inches on all models, and all models are also two inches wider than those of yesteryear. However, the most exciting changes have been reserved for the Acura TLX Type S. Here’s what sets it apart:

  • Exterior Design: It’s easy to spot the Acura TLX Type S, which carries exclusive features like a Gloss Black Decklid Spoiler, a Gloss Black Front Splitter and Rear Diffuser, and an Open Surface Diamond Pentagon Grille.
  • Interior Design: The TLX Type S shares a few interior features with the A-Spec® trim, including its Perforated Milano leather/Ultrasuede® sport seats, its leather-wrapped flat-bottom sport steering wheel, and its Geometric Patterned Brushed Aluminum trim. Of course, the steering wheel comes emblazoned with a unique Type S logo.
