Learning How To Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Checking the oil level in your car used to be as simple as checking the dipstick, but not all of today’s cars have dipsticks. Some have a special electronic oil level system, so be sure to check your car’s owner’s manual. Checking your car’s oil level might not even require you to get under your hood! Manually checking your oil level only takes a few moments. Here’s the process from start to finish:

• Ensure that your vehicle is parked on level ground, then turn off the ignition. Make sure that you’ve given your engine enough time to cool down.
• Pop the hood of your car and locate the dipstick.
• Pull the dipstick from the engine and wipe any oil off the end of it.
• Put the dipstick fully into the tube then pull it out again to get a gauge of your oil level.

You will typically see two marks on your dipstick that mark the proper oil level. If your oil level is in between those two marks, your oil level is sufficient. If not, you need more oil in your engine. Again, consult your owner’s manual for the right type of oil. Remove the oil filler cap when you have the right type of oil, then add a little oil at a time until you reach the right level.
