Why is Tire Rotation Important?

Two Rows of tires on Shelves

Tire rotation is important because it makes your tires last longer, but what is tire rotation? Essentially, it stops any one tire from wearing out faster than the other tires. Discover more about tire rotation below, then stop by the Kearny Mesa Acura service center near National City when you’re ready for your next tire rotation!

Drivetrain and Tire Rotation

Every time you turn your wheels, accelerate, or turn around corners, you create friction between your tires and the road. Depending on which drivetrain your Acura model uses, your tire tread may end up wearing out at a different rate:

  • Front-wheel drive: Engine power is directed to the front wheels, which are responsible for steering, starting and most of the stopping force. Therefore the front tires will wear out the fastest.
  • Rear-wheel drive vehicle: Engine power is directed to the rear wheels, but the front wheels are still responsible for steering and much of braking. The rear tires will still wear out faster than the front tires, although at a general slower rate.
  • All-wheel drive vehicle: Engine power is more evenly distributed, but there are many experts out there that maintain that the rear tires will still wear out faster.
  • Intelligent all-wheel drive systems: Going around curves means different levels on strain and friction on the inside tires vs. outside tires. Some advanced all-wheel drive systems can even direct power to an individual wheel while driving around a curve for better cornering, which will further affect tire life.

You’ve got the basics. Why don’t you find out how to rotate your tires at home?

What Happens If You Don’t Rotate Your Tires

Make sure to schedule service regularly and get a tire rotation every 5,000 miles to every 7,500 miles. Otherwise, you may find your tires wearing out faster than they should. It can also lead to a number of unfortunate consequences such as:

  • Poor traction and skidding on the roads
  • More rapid deterioration of brake pads
  • Flat tires and blowouts
